3rd day with Joy and return to Beijing

We completed all our paperwork and were ready to return to Beijing today. Joy was tearful in the morning when we asked her how she was feeling. She would now really be leaving her home.

We are also having an interesting transition in developing a parent/child relationship. Joy is very independent and is admired by her shy and retiring friends for her gumption and "take charge" personality in diverse situations. Joy has obviously survived by being proactive and acting as "the squeaky wheel". We are having challenges establishing ourselves as the parents, especially since we don't speak the language. Joy has also not been around men and is a bit uncomfortable around Max.

I continue to say that this bonding is a delicate process. We keep weighing the important way to establish ourselves with her, consider her maintaining her dignity, cultural aspects, etc.

We returned to Beijing today and purposed to do a little shopping for Joy. She came to us with only a small backpack. She only has the clothes on her back and one change of clothing. Her shoes are one entire size to small. Yet, she has been reticent to allow us to by her anything. I note that she is very practical and may think that many things are not necessary. She may also be shy to pick things out and not want to ask for too much. We insisted on at least buying her shoes today. I think that as she becomes more comfortable she will allow us to buy her more things.

Finally, tonight, we had an interesting Mongolian dinner.
